Donut Quilt Block tutorial
The Donut quilt block is a traditional quilt block in disguise.
If you are familiar with traditional quilt blocks, you are probably familiar with the Shoo Fly block. (If not, learn about the shoo fly block here.) This block is an easy variation of the shoo fly.

Fabric requirements
These fabric sizes make a 12″ finished block, but it is easy to calculate for other block sizes.
This block uses light and dark fabrics. You can use only two fabrics or a variety of fabrics for a scrappy look. You can also switch light and dark for different looks.
- four dark fabric 4-1/2″ squares
- one light fabric 4-1/2″ square
- four light and dark 4-1/2″ half-square triangles*
* Use your favourite method to make the half-square triangle units. If you have never made these before, try the Easiest Ever Method or the Most Popular Method.
Tutorial
Layout the pieces with the light square in the middle.
The dark squares go at north, south, east and west and the triangle units go at the corners.

Join the pieces into rows and then join the rows together.
Alternate double chocolate and old-fashioned plain to make a yummy quilt.

Even better – these donuts have no calories! Enjoy making one or a whole dozen.
