Nine Patch Quilt Variations
One of the reasons the nine patch quilt block is still so popular is because it is so versatile. This simple block can look totally different with simple layout change.
These ideas will get you started designing your own quilt with nine patch blocks. For more inspiration, check out the Nine Patch Quilt Block Workbook.
Layout one – Just the block
A layout with just nine patch blocks doesnโt have to be boring. This is a great way to showcase fabric and colour.

I used this layout in my January 2022 Island Batik challenge project.
This layout lets the gradient teal fabric be the star of the show. It looks more complicated than it is.
Layout two – Just the block, alternate light/dark
This is the traditional nine patch block layout.

If you strip piece the blocks, it is a quick and easy quilt – great as a last minute gift or a charity quilt.
Layout three – With sashing
This is a very traditional layout.

Layout four – With alternate blocks
Adding alternate plain blocks is a great way to use a focus fabric like a large print or seasonal print.
But it is also a way to extend the background.

This is a great way to make spaces on your quilt that can be embellished with appliquรฉ, embroidery or free motion quilting.
Layout five – On point
Turning blocks on point gives a whole new look to a quilt.

Playing with colour gives a lot of design options.
Layout six – On point with alternates
Adding alternate plain blocks on point not only adds fun to the design, it also makes it quicker to assemble.

No matter how you lay it out, a basic nine patch block will give you a beautiful quilt.
