Fall Nine Patch Sampler
This beautiful sampler quilt is made with the colours of autumn. It will make you think of crunchy leaves, pumpkin spice and cozy sweaters.

Fabric
I choose the border fabric first, and then picked out fat quarters in colours that matched.

Within each block, I chose the fabrics randomly so that each block has a lot of different fabrics in it.
Even the background is scrappy. I used a variety of light coloured prints.
I love the blend of all the different colours. I think they coordinate with the sashing fabric very nicely and remind me of fall leaves.
Pattern
This quilt is made up of six different blocks. Each block is a variation of a nine patch, and they are scrappy-pieced with random fabric placement.
A basic nine patch block is made up of nine squares arranged in a 3 x 3 layout.

The rest of the blocks are made up of nine squares, but some of the squares are made up of smaller pieces.
Shoofly and Friendship star are closely related quilt blocks. They are each made up of five squares and four half-square triangles, but in different layouts.
Simple Rail Fence is an easy 12″ block inspired by the traditional rail fence quilt pattern.

Churn dash is a block with half-square triangles and rectangular pieces. It is the most complex block in this quilt, but it isn’t difficult to make.

Quilting
In this quilt, the fabric and colour is the star of the show, so I wanted the quilting to support that.
I quilted with straight vertical lines along the seam lines of the blocks.

But to add a bit of interest, I used a decorative stitch on my sewing machine. This little wave stitch is a great way to get a result that looks complicated even though it is very easy.

It also solves the problem of trying to stitch in the ditch of the seam.
Don’t believe people that try to tell you that quilting in the ditch is an easy beginner technique. It is actually pretty difficult to do. It bothers me when I hear it recommended to beginners.

Using a decorative stitch solves the difficulty, because you just have to make sure the stitch goes over the seam line.
Size
This is the medium version of the Nine Patch Sampler Quilt, but I used 6″ borders instead of the 5″ borders in the pattern.
That makes the finished size of the quilt 54″ x 72″.
