Tools you need for Quilting

For new quilters, the number of tools that are available for quilting can be overwhelming. There are many specialty items that make quilting faster and easier, but where should you even start?

To get started quilting, you only need a few basic tools. Once you have made a few projects, you can invest in more specialty equipment.

Tools you need to get started quilting

List of quilting tools

These are the basic tools every quilter should have.

Tools for Traditional Quilting

Traditional quilting is stitched by hand using templates to cut the shapes.

For this type of quilting, all you need to get started is some cardboard for the templates, a pencil for marking the shapes, fabric scissors and a hand sewing needle and thread.

This is a very economical quilting technique, but most people quilt using sewing machines and modern cutting techniques.

Tools for cutting fabric

To cut fabric accurately and efficiently, use a rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat. These rulers are designed for cutting fabric – don’t use craft or office rulers.

Get the largest cutting mat that you can afford and that you can store flat.

There are hundreds of specialty rulers, but if you only get one, I recommend a 6″ x 12″ ruler. Check out this article for How to get the most from your 6″ x 12″ ruler.

Tools for Sewing

Any basic sewing machine can be used for quilting. There is no need to invest in a top of the line.

If you are buying a new machine, go to a dealership if possible and try out a bunch of different machines.

Tools for Pressing

Pressing is an important part of quilting, but it doesn’t require anything special. Whatever iron and ironing board you have will be fine.

Pressing can be a controversial topic among quilters. Some people like to press their seams to the dark side and others press their seams open.

I recommend something called Thoughtful Pressing. This involves a bit more work to figure out the best option for the situation, but once you are used to it, it will become second nature.

Necessary Evil

No one plans on making mistakes, but everyone makes them. Because of that, a seam ripper is a necessary tool for any quilter.

There is no need for anything special, but a nice seam ripper might help you feel better about taking out your sewing.
