Tutorial
This tutorial is for a 5″ block.
Since this block finishes at 5โ, accuracy is important. Check out these tips for getting an accurate 1/4โ seam.

Make half-square triangles
Using eight background and eight feature 1-1/2โ squares, make eight half-square triangles using the Easiest Ever method.

On the back of the lighter fabric, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner.
Place each light square right sides together with a feature fabric square and stitch right on the marked line.

Trim 1/4โ away from the line with scissors or a rotary cutter.

Press the seam to the dark side.
This piece should be a 1-1/2โ half-square triangle.

You will make a total of eight HST units.
I donโt usually use this construction technique because the trimmed triangle is waste, but in this case it is not a lot of waste because the pieces are so small.
Feel free to substitute another half-square triangle method, but that will impact the fabric pieces you need to cut.
Make the corner pieces
For each of the corner sections, you will need two of the half-square triangle units from step one, one light 1-1/2โ square and one feature 1-1/2โ square.

Lay them out as shown in the image. Be sure that the sides of the feature fabric triangles are touching the feature fabric squares.
Join the HST / light fabric and HST / feature fabric pairs. Press both seams away from the HST units.

Join these pairs together to form the corner arrow pieces.

You will make a total of four corner pieces.
Final block assembly
Layout the corner pieces with the last three pieces of fabric. You can see how the block goes together in the image.

Be sure that the arrows all point in to the middle of the block.
Join a corner arrow unit onto both sides of the 1-1/2โ x 2-1/2โ background fabric pieces.

Double check the corner orientation!
Join the top and bottom units to opposite sides of the 1-1/2โ x 5-1/2โ strip.

Press the seams towards the middle strip.
This block should be 5-1/2โ square.
