Red and White Nine Patch Sampler Quilt
This quilt is a red and white version of the Nine Patch Sampler Quilt.
Red and white is a traditional colour combination and one of my favourites.

Pattern
The Nine Patch Sampler is a traditional pattern made up of six different blocks that are all made up of nine squares – three across and three down. Some of the squares have piecing options like half square triangles.
This pattern is great for beginners since it introduces new skills gradually.

If you want to make your own Nine Patch Sampler Quilt, I have an on-demand video course that shows how to make a quilt in a variety of sizes.
Fabric
Even though this quilt is red and white, it is still somewhat scrappy. I used a variety of red fabrics for the blocks, but only one fabric per block.
This was a great way to use up red scraps. I call it “controlled scrappy” because it is scrappy but not as chaotic as using random scraps. I have also heard the term “curated scrappy”. I like the look.
I used a couple of different white fabrics, so even the background is scrappy. Using the same fabric for the background and the sashing makes the blocks kind of float on the background.
Quilting
I quilted this quilt with free motion quilting using white thread. Each block was custom stitched to match the piecing.
This was a great project for practicing free motion quilting. Usually I quilt with simple straight lines, so occasionally doing a free motion project helps me practice.

This basic nine patch block is quilted with traditional orange peel.

The friendship star is quilted with feathers.

The shoo fly block has freestyle flowers.

The rail fence block is quilted with squiggly lines echoing the lines in the block.

Churn dash has a combination of straight lines and meander.

The double nine patch is quilted with hearts.

I had a lot of fun quilting the border with a vine and leaves.

Size
This quilt is the medium size option of the pattern, so it has twelve 12″ blocks.
I added a narrow white border, then a narrow red border and then a wide white border. That makes the final dimensions 56″ x 74″.
