Make Half-square Triangles
Use eight squares of each colour to make half-square triangles.
In this tutorial, I use the Easiest Ever HST Method, as shown. This is the best method for tiny half-square triangles. If you prefer to use a different method, you will have to cut your fabric differently.
On the back of the squares of lighter fabric, draw a line from corner to corner. (Donโt want to mark all the squares? Try this hack instead.)
Place a light and dark fabric square right sides together.
Stitch directly on the marked line.
Trim the corner, 1/4โ away from the stitching line.

Open and press. You should have a 1-1/2โ half-square triangle unit (HST).

Make the corner units
For each corner unit, you will use two HST units, one light square and one dark square. Layout the pieces as shown in the diagram. Notice that the dark triangles are pointing to the inside of the square.

Join each HST to a square, pressing the seams away from the HST.

Join these pieces together to make a 2-1/2โ square.

You will make four corner units.
Side units
Join each remaining dark square to a light square in pairs with a 1/4โ seam. Press the seams towards the darker fabric.
You will have one remaining light square.
Layout block
Layout all the pieces according to the image. You should be able to see the nine patch in the middle of the block.

Join the pieces into rows.

Join the rows together.

The final block will be 5-1/2โ square.
