See how to make a traditional cake stand quilt block in this tutorial.
A Cake Stand quilt block will whet your appetite for something yummy. This traditional quilt block uses half-square triangles in a fun way to represent a finely decorated cake on a fancy stand.

My cake is pink on a gold stand, but feel free to make your own block in the colours of your choice.
This tutorial is for a 12″ block.

Tutorial
Follow these steps to make your own Cake Stand quilt block.
Half-square Triangle units
Use the 9″ squares and 3″ squares to make half-square triangle units. This tutorial uses the Most Popular Method for making half-square triangles, but if you prefer, you can make these units another way. If you choose an alternate method, you will need different sizes of fabric.
See more options for making half-square triangles HERE.
You will join the 9″ fabric 1 and fabric 2 for one HST and the 3″ fabric 1 and fabric 2 squares with background 3″ squares.
Mark the Fabric
On the back of the lighter colour fabric squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner.
Stitch
Place the fabric pieces right sides together and stitch 1/4″ away from the marked line on both sides.

Cut the pieces
Cut on the diagonal line that you marked so that you have two pieces.
Open and press
Open each piece and gently press it. You have a half-square triangle unit!
Trim
Trim the units down to size. The larger pieces will be 8-1/2″ square and the smaller ones will be 2-1/2″. This will help your block go together with more accuracy.

You will have one extra of the large half-square triangle pieces. Save this for another block.
For this block, you will use one large HST, two background and fabric 2 HST and eight background and fabric 1 HST.
HST Unit Assembly
Join the fabric 1 and background half-square triangle units with 1/4″ seams in groups of four.
Notice that they are different orientations. They should be mirror images of each other.

Block Assembly
Join one of the fabric 2 / background HST pieces to the edge of one of the long background pieces as shown in the diagram.

Join the last small HST to the other long piece and background 2-1/2″ square as shown.

Join the fabric 1 (cake) pieces as shown.

Join these pieces together in the orientations shown.

The block will be 12-1/2″.
