Deep Blue Sea Quilt Block

“Deep Blue Sea” is a pattern for a ship quilt block embellished with hand embroidery.

The theme for September Quilt Block Mania is “Transportation”. The traditional ship quilt block seems to fit that theme perfectly.

There are many variations of ship quilt blocks, probably because at the time that traditional quilt blocks were first being designed, this was the only way to travel long distances across water.

Even though most people today don’t commonly travel by ships, it is still a popular motif.

This ship block uses easy construction and playful embroidery.

You can use the embroidery design in the pattern or be creative and add fish, birds, mermaids and more!

  1. thank you so much. this is a lovely block. reminds me of when our family went to the Jamaican Islands when I was in high school. dad rented a boat/captain for the seven of us and we sailed around the islands. his boat was decked in colorful sails. it was so fun. first time I swam with a shark and didnt know it was a shark until we told the captain when we got back. he didnt take it so well as we did. LOL
