5″ Churn Dash Quilt Block Tutorial

The traditional Churn Dash quilt block can be easily adjusted to make a 5″ block.

Because this block is so small, it is a great way to use up scraps.

Fabric Requirements

Everything you need to make this project.

Light fabric (background)

  • two 3″ squares
  • five 1-1/2″ squares

Dark fabric

  • two 3″ squares
  • four 1-1/2″ squares

5" Churn Dash quilt block tutorial

Tutorial

Follow these steps to make your own 5″ Churn Dash quilt block.

Make half-square triangles

With the 3″ squares to make half-square triangles using the Most Popular Method for half-square triangles.

This method makes two at a time, so you will end up with four pieces.

Trim them all to 2-1/2″ square.

Join squares

Join a light 1-1/2″ square to each dark 1-1/2″ square.

The piece should be 1-1/2″ x 2-1/2″.

Layout the block

Layout the pieces as shown in the image.

Join pieces into rows

Join each row together with 1/4″ seams.

Press the seams away from the half-square triangles.

Join the rows together

Join the rows together, aligning the seams in the middle.

5" churn dash quilt block.

The block will be 5-1/2″ square.
