Alaska Homestead quilt block tutorial
The Alaska homestead quilt block doesnโt look like a churn dash block, but it is exactly the same pieces, just with a different colour layout.

This block uses three fabrics – a light, dark and feature colour.

Make half-square triangles
Use the two light and dark 3โ squares to make half square triangles (HST).
In this tutorial, I am using the Most Popular HST method. Check out the full tutorial for more details.
If you prefer to use a different technique, you will need to cut your fabric differently.
On the back of a light square, mark a diagonal line.
Place right sides together with a dark square and then stitch 1/4โ away from the marked line on both sides.
Cut apart on the marked line, then open and press your two HST pieces.
Trim these pieces down so that they are exactly 2-1/2โ.
Repeat with the other 3โ squares so that you have a total of four HSTs.

Make the side units
Join each light 1-1/2โ square to a feature fabric 1-1/2โ square. Press the seams to the feature fabric.

The resulting piece should be 1-1/2โ x 2-1/2โ.
Block construction
Layout all your pieces as shown in the image. Notice that the feature squares are at the outside of the block.

Join these pieces into three rows.

Join the rows together.
The final block will be 5-1/2โ.
