What's the difference between "patchwork" and "quilting"?

Details

Patchwork” is sewing pieces of fabric together.

Often this is done in some sort of design, but it can also be improvisational or random.

This is also sometimes called “piecing”

Quilting” is the stitching that holds the top, bottom and batting of a quilt together.

Most quilt projects have both patchwork and quilting so the words are often used interchangeably, but they can each be used independently.
