Friendship Star Quilt Variations
Friendship Star is a traditional quilt block, but quilts made with this block don’t have to look old-fashioned. Simple colour and layout changes can make quilts that are either beautifully traditional or wonderfully modern.

These ideas will get you started designing your own quilt with the friendship star block. For more inspiration, check out the Friendship Star Inspiration Workbook.
Layout one – Just the block
Friendship star blocks can be used all by themselves with no other blocks, borders or sashing.

Even with only two colours, you get a great quilt.
Layout two – With alternate blocks
Adding plain alternate blocks makes an interesting quilt, and it is a quick and easy way to make your quilt larger.

If the alternate blocks match the background colour, there will be a lot of negative space for quilting designs.
Layout three – With Sashing
Sashing is a nice way to give definition to each star. It also gives some wiggle room if your blocks aren’t exactly the same size.

Remember that sashing doesn’t have to be all one colour. You can use multiple colours in your sashing for fun effects.
Layout four – On point
Turning blocks on point always makes an interesting quilt.

Layout six – On point with alternates
Adding alternate blocks to the on-point design can make the rows stand out.

There are many more ways to use the friendship star block, but this will get your ideas flowing.
