Do I have to use white fabric and thread for hardanger embroidery?

Traditional hardanger embroidery is done with white thread on white fabric and this is a beautiful classic option. It looks really nice and because the thread and fabric are the same colour, any tufts of fabric that peek out on the cut areas blend in and aren’t as noticeable.

But when you’re doing your own stitching, you can be creative and use whatever colour combinations you want. That is the beauty of making your own things.

So you can use a different coloured fabric with white or ivory thread.

You can use a different colour of thread, either a single colour of thread, a variegated thread or multiple different threads.

You can even combine coloured fabrics and threads for fun, modern interpretations.

So when you’re making hardanger, you can stick to the classic white and white or use whatever colour combinations you like.
