Is it better to do hand embroidery holding the hoop in your hand or should you use a stand to hold it?
In my opinion, the biggest factor impacting whether you should use a stand or hold your hoop in your hand is the way you stitch.
If you are stitching with a โsewingโ technique, where you put the needle down and up and then pull it through, it will be easier to hold the hoop in your hand.
Holding the hoop allows you to easily rotate the angle of it as you are stitching so that your wrist and arm are always in comfortable positions.
This is common with stitches like running stitch, chain stitch, back stitch, etc.
If you are stitching with the โstabโ technique where you pull the needle through to the back all the way and then pull it back up to the front, then a stand is helpful because it allows you to use both hands to pull the needle through the fabric.
Of course, there are other considerations such as how large your piece is, if you have back problems, if you can afford an embroidery stand, how often you do hand stitching and more
But I think the way you stitch is the most important thing to consider.
