In this tutorial, you will learn how to make a 5โ€ version of the Red Cross quilt block.

Fabric requirements

These are for a 5″ finished block. Use light and dark fabric with lots of contrast.

dark fabric:

  • one 1-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ squares
  • four 1-1/2″ squares

light fabric:

  • four 1-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ squares
  • four 1-1/2″ squares

See each step in the process, with images to help guide you.

Make the centre unit

Join four light 1-1/2″ squares and two dark 1-1/2″ squares to make two strips that are light – dark – light.

These strips should be 3-1/2″ long. If not, adjust your seam allowance.

Join these onto either side of the dark 1-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ piece.

Block Layout

Onto the ends of two of the light 1-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ pieces, join a dark 1-1/2″ square.

These pieces should be 5-1/2″ long.

Add the remaining 1-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ light pieces to the sides of the centre unit.

Join the pieces into rows and then join the rows together.

The block will be 5-1/2โ€.
