Delectable Mountains Quilt Block Tutorial
Delectable Mountains is a traditional quilt block inspired by mountains. There are a few options for making this block, but this is an easy method of sewing it.
Be sure to check out the two variations for this block. They are almost the same, but make totally different quilts.
This tutorial makes pieces that finish at 6″ x 7-/12″. To see how to make a 12″ block, scroll to the end.

Tutorial
Follow these steps to make your own Delectable Mountains quilt block.
Half-square Triangles
With the two squares, make two half-square triangles.
I use the Most Popular Method to make these, but you can choose your favourite method. (NOTE: If you choose a different method, you might have different fabric requirements.)
Once the half-square triangles have been stitched, trim them so that they are 8″ square.
Cut the triangle units
Cut the first HST unit into four equal strips – 2″ x 8″.
Then re-arrange the order of the strips. Instead of 1-2-3-4, they will be 4-3-2-1.
Join these pieces together with a 1/4″ seam.
For this block, I am cutting the two HST units in different ways. Notice that the second HST unit has a different orientation when I cut.
This will result in two pieces that are mirror images of each other.
After cutting, re-arrange and join in the same way.
These pieces will be 6-1/2″ x 8″, which means in a finished quilt, they will be 6″ x 7-1/2″
Using the piece in a quilt
This piece is not square, but as long as all your pieces are the same size, it is great to use in a quilt.
oops!
Did you accidentally make two identical pieces instead of mirror image pieces?
That’s not a problem. You can still use these, but the quilts will look totally different.

Making a 12″ block
If you are using these pieces and you need a 12″ block, you can join two and then add strips of fabric onto the top and the bottom.
