Tutorial
Because this block is so small, an accurate 1/4″ seam allowance is important. These construction techniques make it easier.
Make half-square triangles

With four dark and four contrasting 1-1/2″ squares, make half-square triangles using the easiest ever method.

I recommend the easiest ever method because these pieces are so small. If you prefer a different technique, fee free to use it.
Side units
Use the background fabric rectangles and the rest of the 1-1/2″ dark and contrasting fabric squares to make the side units.

Stitch the squares

Align one of the squares at the end of a rectangle.
Stitch from corner to corner.
Trim and press

Trim the excess fabric 1/4″ away from the stitching line.

Fold back and press.
Repeat on the other side

Add another square to the other end of the rectangle.
Make two units with dark squares and two units with contrasting fabric squares.
Inner nine patch unit
Layout the pieces as shown like a nine patch block.

Join pieces in rows

Join the pieces into rows. Pay close attention to the layout of the contrasting fabric pieces.
Press the seams towards the light fabric.
Assemble the nine patch

Join the rows together.
This unit should be 3-1/2″ square.
Block assembly

Layout the block units, being sure to match the dark and contrasting fabrics.

Join the pieces into rows.

The final block should be 5-1/2″ square.
