How to finish the edges of window hangings

If you are making a pojagi patchwork piece to use as a window hanging, how do you finish the edges?

You could finish the edge with binding, just like a quilt, but I think itโ€™s unnecessarily difficult.

When a piece is hanging in a window, you wonโ€™t notice the contrasting colour, it will just look like a dark seam.

So I finish my edges with just a simple hem. This is easy to do and it allows me to change the orientation of the piece because there is no clear top and bottom.

Details

Hereโ€™s how to do the simple hem:

Trim the edges to be straight.

Fold over 1/4โ€ and press.

Fold over another 1/4โ€ and press.

Topstitch along the edge of the fold.

Thatโ€™s how easy it is!

Do one side at a time, donโ€™t try to stitch in one continuous loop.

I donโ€™t trim down the corners, I just fold them under. If your machine has problems with the layers of fabric, try using a hump jumper and take it slow.
