Don't ignore this quilting safety rule!

What is the most important safety tip for quilters?

Close the blade on your rotary cutter!

A rotary cutter is basically a razor blade put into a pizza cutter and it is super sharp.

If you ask a group of quilters, you will probably hear a story of someone who got cut badly with their cutter.

So get into the habit of always closing the blade before you set it down, for your safety and the safety of anyone else near you.

This is something I am very strict about in my classes. Once I had a woman who was constantly setting her cutter down with the blade open.

After nagging her about it a bunch of times, she finally told me that she left it open because the lock on that particular cutter was painful for her hands.

Once we realized the problem, she was able to try other cutters and get one that opens and closes automatically with pressure. When you cut, it opens and as soon as you let go, the blade goes back inside. That was the perfect solution for her.

So if you have a physical problem with closing the blade on your rotary cutter, check at a local quilt shop and see if they have any solutions for you.

But if it’s just a bad habit, do what you have to do to fix it. You don’t want to learn the hard way how important this is.

Keep my mom voice in your head “Close the blade on your rotary cutter before you put it down!”
