I don’t know where the name “Clown’s Choice” comes from. This quilt block is fun, but it isn’t a joke. See how to make it in this tutorial

Make Quarter-square Triangles

The basis of this block is the quarter-square triangles (QST).

I make these using the Most Popular Method for Quarter-square Triangles. If you prefer, you can make these units with a different method, but you will have to cut your fabric differently.

Use all the 5-1/2″ squares of fabric.

On the back of the lighter fabric, draw a line from corner to corner.

Place this fabric right sides together with a darker fabric and stitch 1/4″ away from the line on both sides.

Cut on the middle line, then open and press. You will have two half-square triangle pieces (HST)

Now draw a line on the back of one of the HST pieces. Place this HST together with the other HST, rotating so that the opposite colours are touching.

Stitch 1/4″ away from the line on both sides, then cut and press as before.

You now have two quarter-square triangle units.

Trim this piece down to 4-1/2″.

Repeat with the rest of the 5-1/2″ squares.

NOTE: This method will give you six QST units, but only five are needed for the block. Choose your favourite ones and save the last one for another project.

Block Construction

Layout the QST units and 4-1/2″ square as shown in the diagram.

Now assemble the block like a nine patch.

Join the pieces into three rows, pressing the seams away from the QSTs. Then join the rows together.

The block will be 12-1/2″.
