How to finish a patchwork shower curtain

A patchwork shower curtain is made with the same techniques as my stained glass window hangings, but it requires holes on the top edge to hang it. In this tutorial, you will learn how to finish the edge with button holes.

The pattern used in this tutorial is the Easy Patchwork Shower Curtain, but the finishing technique applies to any fabric shower curtain.

Tutorial

Adding the buttonholes is the very last thing to be done. The shower curtain should be complete with all edges hemmed.

Practice First

Before sewing on the shower curtain itself, practice marking and stitching buttonholes on a similar fabric.

This will ensure that your machine is working properly and that you can line up and stitch the buttonholes consistently.

Mark the spots

Mark twelve equally-spaced points across the top edge of the shower curtain.

I used the plastic shower curtain liner as a template. It is a lot easier than using a ruler.

Stabilize

Cut pieces of fabric about 1-1/2″ square and stabilize them with interfacing. You can use either fusible or sew-in interfacing. Whatever you have on hand is fine.

Put one onto the back of the shower curtain at each mark. This will help add extra support to the buttonholes. You can use glue or temporary adhesive to hold them in place while you are sewing.

Stitch the buttonholes

Stitch a buttonhole onto each mark.

Trim excess threads and cut open the holes and the shower curtain is ready to be hung up.

Enjoy!
