Easy Fan Quilt Block Tutorial
See how to make a fan quilt block the easy way in this quilting tutorial.
Traditionally fan quilt blocks were made with templates. Eventually specialty rulers were created to make the fan pieces.
This tutorial is for a fan quilt block that doesn’t require any special tools. You will only use your regular rulers and rotary cutter.
Tutorial makes a 12″ block.

Tutorial
Follow these steps to make your own Easy Fan quilt block.
Blade units
The blades of the fan are made with the 2-1/2″ x 7-1/2″ pieces.
You can use nine pieces of the same colour, all different colours or some combination. In the sample block, I am using five dark blue and five light blue and alternating them.
On one end of the piece, mark spots 3/4″ in from each corner.
Trim the piece aligning the 3/4″ mark with the corresponding corner.

Cut all nine pieces this way.
Assemble the fan
Join fan pieces with a 1/4″ seam.

Notice that this piece is a bit too big for the block. That is fine. It will be trimmed later.
Fusible web
On the fusible web, mark quarter square curves 3-1/2″ and 10″ from the corner of the square.

Cut the fusible web about 1/2″ away from the marked lines.
Fuse the large piece onto the back of the fan blade unit and the small piece onto the back of the fan base unit.
Block Assembly
Fuse the pieces onto the background fabric square, then trim the sides of the fan blades to match the sides of the block.

The block will be 12-1/2″
