Double Spools Quilt Block Tutorial
Double Spools is a traditional quilt block that is easy to make and versatile to use.

This 12″ inch block is made by combining four 6″ blocks. It can be made with two contrasting colours or different shades of the same colour. If you like this block, you could make a whole quilt with the 6″ blocks. It would look great as a three fabric quilt, or as a scrappy quilt.
There are other methods for making the spool blocks, but I chose this method so that it would be easier to embellish the background fabric.

Tutorial
Stitch all seams with a 1/4″ seam allowance, unless otherwise indicated.
Spool Sides
Mark the back of the 2″ squares with a diagonal line.
Add same colour squares to each end of the background fabric rectangles, with the diagonal lines going in opposite directions.

Stitch directly on the diagonal line.
Trim 1/4″ away from the stitched line.

Open and press the completed side.
Assemble Spools
Join 2″ x 3-1/2″ pieces onto opposite sides of the 3-1/2″ squares.
Then join the spool sides, matching the colours as shown in the diagram.

When complete, these pieces should be 6-1/2″ square.

You will have four blocks in total, two each of the different colour layouts.
Full Block Assembly
Join the four 6-1/2″ blocks together, alternating the green and blue.

The finished block will be 12-1/2″ square.
Block Inspiration
The spool block is very versatile. It is pretty simple to adjust the block to different sizes.
It is fun to make spools in a bunch of different colours.

You can also substitute another block for the square in the middle.

Have fun playing with all the spool block variations.
