There are a variety of cross stitch variations that can be used in surface embroidery. These are different than “cross stitch” – the counted thread embroidery form done on aida cloth following a chart.
Once you know the basic bargello stitches, there are many different variations you can enjoy. For example, if you combine a small zig zag with a large zig zag, you get a design that looks like hearts.
Bargello stitching is made up of straight vertical stitches in repeating patterns. Commonly, this is a zig zag pattern with differences in spacing giving variations in the design. But there are many more complex designs beyond zig zag. One common traditional design is made up of diamonds.
This project is a great example of three-dimensional pojagi. It only uses the basic pojagi seam, but with great impact. It’s a fun project that looks more complicated than it is.
