Embroidery is an art form. In other hand crafts like sewing, knitting and quilting, you (hopefully) get a useful item when you are done like a skirt, a bag, a sweater or a blanket.
But embroidery is used to embellish and make things beautiful. You will get a piece to display on the wall or you will just have a prettier piece of clothing, bag or towel.
So itโs difficult to put a monetary number on the finished product because it doesnโt have a large market value. If you want to do hand embroidery as a job to make money, it is probably better to do something else.
But if you want to embroidery to express your creativity, challenge yourself and make something beautiful, than it can be a great hobby choice.
Studies have shown that being creative and making things with your hands can be beneficial to your mental health. And embroidery is a great way to be creative.
Compared to most other fibre arts (sewing, quilting, weaving, knitting, crochet), embroidery is pretty inexpensive to do. All you need is a needle, thread and maybe a hoop. You can get started by stitching on things you already have around the house.
Does a tea towel with hand embroidery dry dishes better than just a plain one? No, it doesnโt. But it might make you smile when you pick it up, and thatโs hard to put a price on.

It is certainly possible to spend a lot of money on embroidery and some people do, but you can stitch beautiful things on any budget.
If you compare hand embroidery to other recreational activities like skiing or golfing, itโs practically free.
