Clean up & National Quilt Show

The past two weeks have been busy, but I haven’t done a lot of sewing.  First, I got new cupboards for the studio, and then I sorted everything I have.  It is the first time in many years that I have seen everything in one place.  This will make it easier to use my stash, since it is not stashed so securely.  I love how it looks now!

It was good that I was able to see how much I have (and how many UFOs I have), since last week was the Canadian Quilters’ Association National Juried Show.  This show has entries from all across Canada, and the show itself moves from year to year.  This year it was in Toronto, which is driving distance for me.  I took my younger daughter, who is the only one of my kids interested.

The whole show was amazing, and this year there were a lot of special things, since it’s Canada’s 150th anniversary.  My daughter did a puzzle at the aurifil booth and won a spool of thread!  (I may or may not have stolen it from her.  If I did, I’ll replace it with another type of thread for her.)

There were so many beautiful quilts, I did not take pictures of them all.  I purchased the book which has pictures of every entry.  Here are a couple of pictures to give you a taste.

“Ladies of the Sea” had beautiful appliqué.

This quilt, “Maybe Someday” was the quilt I voted for with my Viewer’s Choice ballot.  It is a traditional design, but the scale is unbelievable.

Each of the small squares was 1/2″, so they are 4 1/2″ blocks.  All of the stars had the kaleidoscope effect.

My daughter was really impressed with the art quilts.  I have never done this style, so I don’t think she had ever seen it before.  She likes drawing, so this really got her imagination going.

It was a great day, and I maintained self-control in the vendor hall.  Since it was only a few days after I made a list of all my UFOs (including kits not even started), I didn’t buy any fabric or kits.  There was a wool appliqué pillow kit that I really, really wanted, but I know it will be a long time before I even get to starting it, so I was able to let it go.  I will at least wait until I have space to store it 🙂
